What PTSD Treatment Looks Like at New Day Recovery

Our PTSD care sits between weekly counseling and hospital-based treatment. You get several hours of structured therapy each week, including individual sessions, group work, and skills practice, while you keep living at home and stay connected to work, school, and family. For many people that is the right amount of support to steady sleep, manage triggers, and rebuild daily routines.

Care is trauma-informed from the first phone call. Pace, setting, and questions are built around safety and choice, so you are never pushed to retell more than you are ready to share.

We work with PTSD on its own and PTSD alongside substance use. Both come through the same assessment and the same clinical team.

Who Our PTSD Treatment Is For

Outpatient PTSD treatment fits adults who are safe at home and able to attend sessions consistently.

Veterans & service members

Combat and service-related trauma, with confidentiality and scheduling that respect duty obligations.

First responders

Police, fire, EMS, and dispatch dealing with repeated exposure on the job.

Survivors of assault or accidents

Single-incident trauma, worked through at a pace you set.

Adults using to cope

Drinking or drug use that is tied to trauma symptoms rather than separate from them.

PTSD with anxiety or depression

Overlapping conditions treated in one plan, not one at a time.

If substance use needs to be stabilized first, medically supervised detox can come before treatment begins. If your assessment points toward a level of care beyond what outpatient treatment provides, we will tell you plainly and help you find the right next step.

PTSD and Substance Use, Treated Together

Trauma and substance use often travel together, and treating one while setting the other aside tends to leave the harder half unaddressed. SAMHSA guidance on co-occurring disorders is clear that overlapping conditions change what treatment should look like, which is why our assessment screens for both from the start.

- Alcohol

- Drinking that begins as a way to get to sleep or quiet hypervigilance

- Prescriptions & opioids

- Use that starts with an injury and continues well past it

- Anxiety & depression

- Mood symptoms layered on top of trauma, each making the other harder

Your plan addresses these as one picture. Trauma work, substance use care, and family involvement sit in the same treatment plan rather than in separate programs that never speak to each other.

Our Levels of Care for PTSD

We offer a continuum of outpatient care so you can move up or down a level as your needs change. Your assessment recommends a starting point, and the plan changes as you do.

Not sure which level fits? Start with our outpatient program overview, or let admissions recommend a starting point. When substance use needs to be stabilized first, we also offer medically supervised detox before treatment begins.

Level of care Setting Structure Best fit
PHP In person, San Antonio Full-day programming most days of the week Stepping down from detox or a hospital stay, or needing daily structure
IOP In person, San Antonio Several sessions a week, daytime or evening Real structure while keeping work, school, or a duty schedule
Virtual IOP Online, anywhere in Texas The same structure as our IOP, joined remotely Distance, transport, or schedule makes commuting hard
Online IOP Online, across Texas Flexible morning, afternoon, and evening sessions A mental health focus, including PTSD without a primary substance use concern
Sober living Structured housing Ongoing, non-clinical Needing a stable living environment while continuing outpatient care

Sober living is structured housing and peer support, not clinical treatment. It works alongside outpatient care, not in place of it.

The Therapies Behind Your Care

Your plan draws on evidence-based approaches, and your therapist matches the right mix to what you are working through.

Trauma-informed care

The foundation of how we work with PTSD. Safety, trust, and choice shape every session, so treatment does not repeat the loss of control that trauma created.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Spot and shift the thought patterns that fuel avoidance, low mood, and substance use.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Build emotional regulation and distress-tolerance skills for intense feelings, flashbacks, and cravings.

Motivational interviewing

Work through mixed feelings about treatment and build your own reasons for change.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)

Challenge the rigid beliefs, including guilt and self-blame, that keep you stuck in unhelpful patterns.

Experiential therapy

Process emotions through action, including outdoor activities, yoga, and mindfulness, when talking alone is not enough.

Support for Veterans, Service Members, and First Responders

San Antonio is a military city, and many of the people we work with carry trauma tied to their service or their shift. Our specialty tracks put you in groups with people who understand the context, so you spend less time explaining and more time working.

Confidentiality matters here more than almost anywhere. We keep scheduling and paperwork discreet, and virtual sessions give you a way to stay in treatment around duty hours, training, and shift rotations.

Coverage and eligibility for veterans and service members vary by plan. Our admissions team can verify your benefits and explain your options before you start.

PTSD Treatment FAQs

Do I need a substance use problem to get PTSD treatment here? +

No. We work with adults seeking treatment for PTSD on its own, and with adults managing PTSD alongside substance use. Our assessment looks at the full picture so your plan addresses everything you are carrying, not one symptom at a time.

Can I keep working while I am in PTSD treatment? +

Many people do. IOP runs daytime or evening sessions, and our virtual and online programs let you join from home. Our admissions team can talk through which schedule fits your work or duty obligations.

Will my insurance cover PTSD treatment? +

Many plans cover outpatient mental health treatment, but coverage varies by plan. The most reliable way to know is a free benefits check. Our admissions team verifies your insurance and explains what your plan includes before you start.

What happens at my first appointment? +

A licensed clinician learns about your history, your symptoms, and your goals, screens for co-occurring needs, and works with you to choose a starting level of care. You set the pace on how much you share.

How long does outpatient PTSD treatment last? +

There is no fixed timeline. Length depends on your symptoms, your progress, and your goals. Your clinical team discusses realistic timeframes during your assessment and adjusts as you go. Many people step down to a lighter level of care before finishing.

Do you treat veterans and active-duty service members? +

Yes. We offer dedicated tracks for veterans, service members, and first responders. Coverage and eligibility vary by plan, so our admissions team verifies your benefits and explains your options before you start.

What if I am in crisis right now? +

If you are thinking about harming yourself or you are in immediate danger, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Our outpatient programs are not an emergency service. Once you are safe, we are here to help you find ongoing support.
